Do you wanna speak English ? Really ?

Some of my friends commented my blog , and now I'm gonna reply it . Sorry for my late...

He commented on this article.

http://capm.seesaa.net/archives/20060917.html

Firstly , he pointed out he has studied some part of engineering , but a lot of Japanese companies don't expect the students to use the knowledge they studied in the universities. As I mentioned before , the companies usually train the employees , so you don't have to have specific skill to enter the companies .

I heard an interesting story from some of U of T students majoying Finance , so I'll comment this part in next time.

Nextly , he said my writing is easy to understand ( I hope this means my writing is good) , and asked me my level of the conversation .

First of all , his English is incredible . He lived in the US more than 3 years ( in this point , he has the same exprience as "Mogura" ) , and his score of TOEIC is almost perfect and his way of speaking is also very good. Because of this , I 'm very glad to hear from him my English is easy to understand.

By the way , Motoyuki Shibata , who is the professor of Tokyo university majoring English Literature , and also the famous translater , said

" If you wanna speaking English very good , you have to have another personality " ,

and I feel very strongly how real his comment is , after coming here . If you wanna speak English fluently , you have to have another personality . This is absolutely true.

In other words , if you wanna speak English fluently , you have to think everything in English . A lot of Japanese students take one or two seconds to reply something when they are asked something in English . One of my teacher said to me this is one of the most typical responses of Japanese people. Firstly , they think something in Japanese and try to translate it in English ( And they usually make mistakes . They usually creat their original expressions. This is because they "automatically" translate Japanese into English , you know ?) . As long as you do this , it'll take 1 or 2 seconds to response it . This is inevitable , you know ?

The thing is Japanese and English have a totally , totally different structure , and this makes Japanese people bad at English . Spanish , French , German , Italy , or so have the Latin root , right ? So , for them learning English is not so difficult as Japanese people .

Of course , even for them , speaking English is very difficult , especially , pronunciation , but the fluency of them is much , much better than that of Japanese . Some of my friends was praised by his friends because of his fluency , but looking back , his fluency is so terrible . All of my friends who came here to study English from the countries having the Latin root are much better than him in the fluency.

What I try to say is not to embarress him , but to emphasize that , for Japanese , it is so hard to speak English fluently. And one of the reason is the way of thinking and structure is so different form Japanese , you know ?

Even right now , my speaking is so terrible . I think I am thinking everything in English . Sometime , I talk to myself , but even at that time , I definitely use English . And whenever I have a dream at night , I am speaking English . I have a English dream !

Everything is so dominated by English , but my speaking is terrible ... I personally believe if you wanna use English in a business field or something like it , you have to spend more than 6 months living the place where English is used .

In my opinion, this time is shortest . And if you wanna establish your English in such a short time , before going there , you have to prepare studying English more than 6 hours per day at least one year ( though , this suits only for Japanese people ). I studied English very hard before coming here. I think after entering the graduate school , I studied English "at least" 8 hours per day . A lot of classes are taken place in English , and the books I read is almost all ( over 90%) English . But my English is this level , you know ?

Of course , how fast people learn English totally depends on the abilitiy of people , but as far as my concerned , a lot of smart people struggle to learn English . Let me give you an example.

Do you know Oki Matsumoto ? I think everybody agree with his smartness if you know him. He graduated from the Law department of Tokyo university , and , he has a record of the youngest person who get the partner of Goldman Sach . He entered Solomon Brothers after graduating from his university , but according to him , the main reason why he choosed Solomon is learning English . Even for him , it is so difficult to speak English that I force himself to speak English , entering the foreign capital company .

In Japan , a lot of people assume you have to learn English . Some English school crazy about advertizing such a message , you know ?

However, it is really true ? English is very time-comsuming . If you wanna make your English level " enough", you have to spend amazing time to learn it . If you don't do it , you can have a lot of time to do another thing. You could take some qualifications , such as CPA . You could have another important skill , such as , writing some programing . And you can enjoy yourself !

If you wanna make your English enough , you have to compute seriously the cost of learning English and the benefit of learning English , and you should put a lot of energy into that thinking . And if you think it deserves it , you have to be crazy about learning English . This is my idea. What do you think about it ?

WHITNEY HOUSTON " WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU "

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQOTR18AG24

This is one of the most basic song in the world , right ? I think I listen to this song more than 100 times , but whenever I listen , I've never disappointed the song .

"careless whisper"

One of my friend , who always criticizes my sense of music , recommended some song. I'll introduce you the song , that is , " careless whisper "

1. original one by George Michael

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yePoVfYpfA

2. cover 1 by Ben Folds & Rufus Wainwright

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZomitDoaopg

3. cover 2 by hyde

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZomitDoaopg

Obviously , the original one is very good . From my point of view , the one covered by Ben & Rufus is not bad , but , the one covered by Hyde is so terrible that I can't afford to hear it ... From his point of view , the song selected by me is so terrible that he can't afford , you know ...

About Job 4 ~ the Custom of Japan's Bank~

Now , I'd like to continue writing the rest . I feel " Mogura" struggled to explain Japan's situation . I also feel the same feeling when I explain to foreiners , you know.By the way , I think there are a lot of people who haven't caught the situation , so if you wanna follow my discussion , please read this.

http://capm.seesaa.net/article/23875969.html

http://capm.seesaa.net/article/23981312.html

http://capm.seesaa.net/article/24040749.html

To explain the situation in more detail, I must tell you about Japanese banks' culture.

Unlike the Western financial institute, Japanese bankers (maybe I should use the word "bank-clerk" instead) are trained in various department or business in one's junior through early senior days. In other words, everybody is expected to be a generarist.

Some bankers spend their first two or three years in mass-retail section and be transfered to the whole-sale section.

This is the part of Mogura's comment . And his suggestion is totally correct .

Do you know " sank cost " ? This is the cost that is good for a short run , but bad for a long run.

Let 's assume you would enter some bank in Japan. If you enter the bank , you would get a lot of benefits , such as , there are few possiblities you would get fired . You would get a good salary ( The salary of the banker is famous for the goodness ) .

But if you get in the bank , you would have to do a lot of things. You would exprience many department , which would make you get the general skill , not special skill, such as , the speciality of M&A , or the speciality of securitarization. And this situation would get your abilities to be specific to the bank you would belong to .

First of all , you have to know the job market in Japan is extremely poor , though , recently , the market has been more and more mature. Do you know the name of " inner job market " ? If you take " Labour Economic " in Japan , you have to study this japan's specific situation .

In stead of the maturity of the secondary market , in japan , " inner job market " is common . That is, the companies work as some kind of the job market , you know.

Let's say , you would enter some company in Japan , and there would be some possiblity your skill or knowledge would not fit into the company you would chooes , right ? If this situation occur , the department of human resourse in your company would transfer your position to another department . For example , if you are not good at the department of sales , you might be transfer to the department of the marketing .

This kind of transformation is very common in Japan , and the thing is even if you fit into some department , the department of human resourse often transfer you to other department . And if you continue this kind of transfer , you will get a lot of information in your company . You would know a lot of workers in the different departments , and you would know a ton of your company-specifc customs , you know .

And the point is this skill is very useful if you belong to your company , but if you try to turn over other company , there will be the huge possibilites your skill will hinder you to get another job , because your skill is firm-specific , you know, so your skill might be useless if you chage your company . What I wanna say is your skill would be some kind of " sank cost " to change your job !

The important thing is the firms in Japan already knows this situation , and they try to make use of it . That is , the firms intentionally make their employee exprience a lot of department , and prevent the worker to change the job , you know ? This is what Mogura wanna say .

Mogura has confronted this kind of complicated situation . Of course , Mogura studied this custom in the class of his university( I also learned this with Mogura in the course of Kazuhito Ikeo's " Japan economic system" . Looking back my undergraduate time, this course was the most important in my undergrate age ) , and has chosen Japan's bank , knowing this custom .

However , you know , learing something in books and in lectures is totally different from learing practically . And it seems to me Mogura cannot help rethinking about the choice he already made . He has spent only 6 months or so in his companies , and has keenly realize his situation . However, fortunately , what Mogura has worked is far more specific than the work for other workers , so as far as I'm concerned , he has some option to change his workplace , using his specific skill.

Is it clear ? I think I have been writing a lot , today , so I feel like stopping writing any more . I'll continue this topic.
