The movie " Spellbound "

After coming here , I've watched so many movies . That is not only for fun , but also for improving my English . I think watching the movie in English is the most difficult for the non-natives . That is so difficult that , sometimes , I cannot understand it even if I put the English subtitle on it.

Anyway , I watch the movie , and , the last week , I watched a really funny movie , that is called , " Spellbound " . I think the Japanese cannot watch it because you cannot rent in the video store in japan ( Of course , if you buy it on amazon.com , you can see it ! ) so I think a lot of Japanese people cannot enjoy it . But , from my point of view , I think this show has some meaning in the US .




First of all , this movie is about the documentary , and , has taken up some kind of the game , that is called , " spelling bee " . This game is really simple . Someone calls some word , and , other people have to call its term correctly . Let's say , if someone calls " travel " , the other has to call , " t-r-a-v-e-l " . If the person misspell it , that mean that person fails . Simple , right ?

This is simple game , but , in the US , this game is popular , and some contest , National Spelling Bee , takes place every year This is the site about it .

I don't remember the exact number , but a lot of Americans , especially youngers , participate in this event . As you imagine , this game is really difficult . All the participants is American , so they have a really good English , right ? But , it is difficult to spell the words correctly . In the campionship , the words is so difficult ! All the words in the final are the words I haven't heard in my life . That is about some kind of teriminology , such as , Christianity , the medical things , or whatever . Anyway , it is really hard .

But , some students can spell them correctly , and , they are so addicted to this game . Some students spend 5 hours per day to memorize the words to win the championship . The thing is some children look like a robot . They automatically spell the word when they hear the words. The way they spell is so fast that it seems they are not human being , but a robot !

When I watched this DVD , I felt that the American , especially the smart ones , really like to compete with each other. I don't know why , but , I strongly felt that while I watched it . And that is the thing the US has , right ?

Anyway , I think this documentary is worth watching it . If you can get it , I recommend you to watch it .
